Lake Þingvallavtn - Summer Serenity

from Sounds of Iceland by Moments In Sound

about

Þingvallavtn - or Lake Thingvellir as it's called in English - is a large lake formed by the melting ice from the glaciers. It is located in Thingvellir National Park, on the popular Golden Circle. The water is approx 3-4 degrees celsius. In summer, in quieter parts of the lake, it is so still that you can hear nothing but silence and the occasional birds or small planes. I took my recorder down to the shore and placed it near a group of black volcanic rocks that were making a lovely sound. In the background you might hear splashing that was created by a group of ducks who appeared to be hunting in a straight line - perhaps for fish? I have never seen behaviour like it, but it was intentional and a lovely surprise to witness.
